The League Update

November 28, 2024

Blue rectangular button with the LWV logo and 100 years strong in text

Friend

It’s only been a few weeks since the 2024 election, and organizations in the democracy space are in a period of recalibrating. We know the coming months and years will be an important time for allyship and partnership, and the League will need to show up in different ways. The LWVUS staff and Board are having important strategic conversations about our path forward, as are Leagues around the country. In the following weeks, Leagues will receive more information about how to navigate the path before us.

This week, I am reflecting on gratitude. On behalf of the entire LWVUS Board, I want to express our sincere appreciation for all of your hard work this year. Your contributions to empower voters and defend democracy make our organization stronger. I want to wish all of our League members a happy, healthy, and restful Thanksgiving. If you take part in the holiday, as you gather to break bread with friends and loved ones, I encourage you to acknowledge the native land you inhabit and learn about the Native Peoples on whose ancestral homelands we gather.

In League,

ACTION

LAST CHANCE: 2025 Voter Registration Project Grant Applications

The League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) is pleased to announce three new projects: the 2025 Young Voter Registration Project, the 2025 New Citizens Voter Registration Project, and the 2025 Former and Currently Incarcerated Voter Registration Project. As part of these projects, LWVEF will award funding to state and local Leagues that undertake voter registration activities aimed at young voters, new citizens, or formerly and/or currently incarcerated voters.

All applications are due by midnight on Nov. 30, 2024, with decisions announced in late December. Funding will only be considered for Leagues attending at least five events within the grant cycle. Leagues must agree to undertake activities in a nonpartisan fashion and must also agree to collect contact information from registrants, as allowable, in order to conduct get-out-the-vote follow-up.

Leagues can find applications for each project and additional information below:

  • 2025 Young Voter Registration Project: Apply Now
  • 2025 New Citizens Voter Registration Project: Apply Now
  • 2025 Former and Currently Incarcerated Voter Registration Project: Apply Now

Please contact Morgan Murray at mmurray@lwv.org with any questions.

Attend the UN Commission on the Status of Women

LWVUS UN Observers are preparing for the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), held from March 10 – 21, 2025, at the United Nations in New York. We are looking for delegates who will attend a minimum of four days and will participate in all varieties of sessions, including commission meetings, side events, and parallel events. This is a self-funded opportunity. Interested members should complete the application and submit it via email to Chris Sagona (csagona@lwv.org) by Sunday, Dec. 1.

Federal Judiciary Study Resources

The LWVUS Federal Judiciary Study Committee has begun to put together resources and materials for Leagues as we prepare for consensus meetings about this critical issue. Members can find a timeline of the study, as well as a recording and slides from last week’s webinar on the League Management Site.

Updated Guidance on Twitter and Emerging Platforms

The LWVUS communications team has been monitoring social media trends and has recently updated our guidance on Twitter and emerging social media platforms like Bluesky and Threads. While LWVUS is not currently posting on these new platforms, we have safeguarded handles on both Bluesky and Threads and will continue to explore the possibility of building out a content strategy and engaging an audience on these emerging platforms. We understand if state and local Leagues choose to no longer prioritize Twitter/X in their communications, but we recommend that Leagues NOT deactivate their accounts. Review our full guidance on the League Management Site.

TEMPLATE: ERA Letter to the Editor

Despite having fulfilled the ratification requirements, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) has not been published. With just weeks left in office, LWV is urging President Biden to act and enshrine gender equality in our Constitution by instructing the Archivist to publish the ERA. State and local Leagues can refer to our letter to the editor template to educate and build public pressure in their community. Access the template in our ERA toolkit.

Join LWV on Dec. 3 for a Free ERA Documentary Screening

"Ratified" is a new documentary on the fight for and status of the ERA and the story of Virginia’s ratification. LWVUS is working hard to build national public pressure on President Biden to ensure that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is published before he leaves office. With a quick turnaround to match the urgency of this moment, we're inviting League leaders to a free, virtual screening of “Ratified” on Tuesday, December 3 at 4pm ET. The screening will be followed by a 20-minute panel discussion to help us all find ways to engage as Leagues and individuals. League leaders can find registration information here. For questions, please contact Rebecca Goldman at rgoldman@lwv.org.

Get Ready for the 2024 Annual League Survey!

It’s almost here! The 2024 Annual League Survey launches on January 2, 2025, and LWVUS is here to help you prepare. Tracking your data now ensures an easy survey experience in January — and puts your League in the running for amazing prizes:

  • One of ten $200 gift cards
  • One of three Convention 2026 registrations
  • States where all local and state Leagues respond to the survey will be entered to win one of two Council 2025 registrations

Find data collection resources and more information on the Annual League Survey are available on the League Management Site.

Check Your "Find a Local League" Page

Each local and state League has an individual page on LWV.org that includes information such as their League website, League leaders, and contact information, such as website and email address. To ensure your League’s information is up to date, we strongly encourage Leagues to review the information on these pages and test their “Ask a Local League a Question” button. Information on these pages is pulled from the Roster Manager Portal: for instructions on how to update your local League page, click here. If any of the buttons on your local League page on LWV.org — like “Ask a Local League a Question” — do not work, please email communications@lwv.org.

ChapterSpot Checklist

This checklist will ensure your League is prepared ahead of our transition to our new membership system, ChapterSpot. LWV provided in-depth guidance for each step on this checklist in our ChapterSpot trainings for presidents: watch a recording on our resources page.
