America Welcomes a New Congress

After a historically turbulent speaker confirmation process, the US welcomed its 118th Congress, led by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy.

In response, the League's CEO, Virginia Kase Solomón, stated:

"We congratulate the new Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, and Patty Murray, the first woman to be elected President Pro Tempore in the Senate. We urge both chambers to work together to put people over politics and preserve the democracy of this great nation."

Monumental Anniversaries

This past month, we observed several meaningful anniversaries.

These included the second anniversary of the deadly January 6 insurrection. In a joint statement, League CEO Virginia Kase Solomón and Board President Dr. Deborah Ann Turner urged the passage of legislation such as the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement acts to prevent similar violence from occurring in the future.

2023 also marked the first year in half a century without the right to abortion. The League continues to stand with all those working to restore our reproductive rights.

Tragedy in Memphis

In early January, police officers killed 29-year-old Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop. In a joint statement, the Leagues of Memphis-Shelby County and the US said:

"At the League, we seek a democracy that values and cherishes every person. When our systems continue to enact violence on Black bodies, our democracy is not whole...

We mourn with the family of Tyre Nichols, and our thoughts are with the city of Memphis as they endure this tragedy. May their mourning bring change to a broken nation."

LWV stands firmly beside our allies in the racial justice movement.
