2023 in Review: Your Most-Read News Stories

 

1. The Supreme Court Rejects Independent State Legislature Theory

Your most-read news story this year was the Supreme Court's (SCOTUS's) decision to protect voters' constitutional rights and defend our system of checks and balances. 

2. The Supreme Court Preserves Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act

SCOTUS's decision in Allen v. Milligan affirmed the rights of Black Alabamian voters, who'd been systemically deprived of their voting power.

3. The Supreme Court Opens the Door to Discrimination Against Same-Sex Couples

League supporters were deeply concerned by SCOTUS's decision upholding a Colorado designer's right to discriminate against LGBTQIA+ Americans.

4. Voting Rights Advocates Prevail in Pennsylvania Voter Purge Lawsuit

Pennsylvania advocates prevailed against the anti-voter group Judicial Watch and prevented voters from being wrongfully purged from the polls.

Throughout 2023, Leagues reached and registered an estimated:

  • 2+ million voters through our digital one-stop shop for election information, VOTE411.org;
  • 1+ million voters through LWV's digital organizing tool League in Action; and 
  • Countless more through tens of thousands of events targeting youth, new and returning citizens, and other voters.

This included registering roughly 100k people to vote in 500+ events on National Voter Registration Day!

A Year of Field Action

 

State and local Leagues did tremendous work to inform, empower, and inspire voters throughout the year. According to our annual survey, which 60% of had filled out at the time at the time of this email's publication, Leagues in 2023:

  • Engaged 26k+ volunteers in election-related activities and 22k+ volunteers in other activities;
  • Hosted 12k+ election-related events;
  • Recruited 4.8k+ members to serve as poll workers;
  • Hosted 1,595 candidate debates, forums, and meet and greets; and
  • Trained 120+ leaders in Power the South events.

This is just a fraction of League work, as 40% of Leagues have yet to respond to the survey.
